Frequently Asked Question.

What are the 4 types of intellectual property?

The reality is that owning a patent, trademark, copyright, or trade secret can be one of the most valuable assets of any business. If you want to start a new company, I strongly recommend considering these forms of intellectual property to help protect your ideas and should become part of the business plan.

What is the difference between intellectual property and copyright?

It’s important to understand that copyright isn’t the only part of the pie regarding intellectual property. It’s just one aspect of the broader scope. That’s not to say that copyright is unimportant—it can get hairy if you’re not careful. However, once you determine whether or not a work falls under copyright protection (most do), you can primarily focus on other areas of intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, and designs.

How long does intellectual property last?

A patent is an intellectual property right granted to an inventor by a country’s government as a territorial right, usually for twenty years.

How do I start my intellectual property?

To obtain a patent in the U.S., the inventor must file a patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which includes:

  1. A written document comprises a description and claims.
  2. Drawings when necessary.
  3. An oath or declaration.
  4. Filing, search, and examination fees.
